New Work - Day of the Disco

It's not quite Halloween but I just couldn't wait that long to unleash the hordes of the undead onto the dance floor.

New Work - Snow Queen

A queen ruling over a harsh, snowy planet somewhere in a far flung corner of the universe. What is the story behind this cold character?

New Work - Night Town

It's festival time in Night Town! Somewhere in the world there lies a great forest, hidden away in this forest grows a tree of unknown age. The inhabitants of this tree appear visible to the human eye only once every 23 years when they hold a festival to celebrate something long forgotten.

Are they celebrating tonight?

New Work - Jellicity

I have just completed this personal piece of work called 'Jellicity'. I thought that 'jellicity' would be a real word, referring to how jellified something was (similar to elasticity), but apparently not. So next time you make some jelly and a friend comments upon its lack of jellicity, you know where the term comes from. Additionally it can refer to, as in this case, a city inside a jellyfish.

.Dock Illustrations

I recently created these designs for an article in a free paper called .Dock (an abbreviation of Document of Creativity in Kobe). .Dock is a paper that documents design related activities in Kobe, a city appointed a City of Design by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization).

The article by Bianca Beuttel (a Kobe based designer-essayist) looks at the relationship between children and design.

New Work - Mammalian Peanut Challenge

Here is a new piece of work that is a slight departure from my usual style. The idea was to get away from my computer and work in a freer more experimental manner. It was nice to get my hands dirty!

Who will win the challenge?

New Work - Jurassic Love

This is a new piece of personal work I have just finished called 'Jurassic Love'. The image represents a fictional (as far as I know) love story between two Diplodocus (Diplodoci?). As we all now know that love story doesn't have a particularly happy ending.

New Work - Spiderlins

I have just completed this new image, observing the life of a rather musical family of Arachnids. I was interested in creating an image with spiders and was inspired by the many interesting shapes that exist in the wild and those yet to be discovered!

New Work - Fly the Coop!

Here is a new piece of work I have recently finished, about the little people we see living in the trees and forests around us. You know what I'm talking about, right? Those little folk? What do you mean you never see them? Your just not looking hard enough!

Snow, shopping arcades and Kyoto.

As you may have noticed, its been a while since I last posted anything here, largely due to work commitments, so I thought I would post a quick rundown of anything noteworthy from the last two months.

To start off, here are some photos of the recent snowfall in Osaka city, the first proper snow I have seen in the city.

Next up is a visit to a cafe called Mole which is built inside the vaults of an old bank. The Cafe serves very good, if a little expensive coffee.

On a considerably less cold day, we recently visited Tenjinbashi-suji, supposedly the longest shopping arcade in Japan! We also made a brief stop to check out the nearby temple.

I made my second visit to Kyoto a few weeks back, in order to see an exhibition by the Japanese Illustrator Junzo Terada. The exhibition was held inside a large department store next to Kyoto station and was very impressive, with work ranging from posters to models and animation.

We also spent time browsing a number of craft shops in town.

Well that's about it for the update, hopefully I will find the time to write on a more regular basis, watch this space!

Tory's Highball

I am rather fond of the Japanese Illustrator Ryohei Yanagihara so when seeing his character design on Suntory's Highball I just had to indulge!

I had never heard of a Highball before but must say I have become quite addicted to the whiskey based drink!

For more of Ryohei Yanagihara's work, check out this site
